Patrick Kuhse - From Prominence To Prison, My Fall From Grace As A Successful Stockbroker

Unfortunately I didn't take any notes for this one, but it has been one of my favorite talks so far. Patrick Kuhse told his life story, which included a midwestern upbringing on a farm, an eye-opening experience at college (Arizona State), rise to prominence as a stock broker, and his subsequent unethical behavior and eventual incarceration. Patrick spoke with a folksy midwestern accent and kept the conversation lively with his many jokes. After feeling the heat from the FBI, he picked his family up and moved them to Costa Rica and lived on the run. It eventually caught up with him and he faced the music and several years in jail. He now goes around giving talks about his story and how to avoid the common unethical trappings that so many people fall prey to.

Interesting trivia: Patrick said at one point he lived in Broken Arrow, OK at the same time Frank Abagnale (of Catch Me if You Can fame) did. He said there must be something in the water :-) There is also an effort in the works to make a movie out of Patrick's story. He has a forthcoming book that should be well worth the cover price.

I saw Patrick last weekend at the IMA Student Leadership Conference in Orlando. My thoughts about his presentation are that He is still a con man. He is still profiting from his lack of personal integrity and ethics through speaking engagements. It seems to be quite a dichotomy!
By the way, I attend college in Broken Arrow, OK. Frank Abagnale still lives there and works as a consultant for law enforcement. He has truly changed; Patrick has not.

To the commnet 11/15/05
If one can actually listen to one of Mr. Kuhse presentations and say that Patrick is not a changed man then they are absolutely insane. I was watching Dr. Phil today and one quote that stuck out is that "You can not change what you can not acknowledge." And I am a beleiver that Mr. Kuhse has acknowledged his wrong doings and has made tremendous efforts in changing himself. He not only has regained his success but he devotes his time in educating others so that they don't make the same mistakes that he has. Mr. Kuhse is a wonderful man and has become a phenenomal leader.

I heard Mr. Kuhse present in early '05
and was very impressed by his open acknowledgement of his failings and his mission to spread this for the betterment of all. To the commenter of 11/15/2005 I offer the thoughts that Patrick was a seriously high-roller. What he makes now is a pittance in comparison, and much of this goes to his desire and requirement to make financial restitution. I recommend attending Patrick's talks, and only wish that he would complete his book(s).
